Come racconta Michel Ciment su "Positif", dei celebri dieci membri dell'industria di Hollywood, in gran parte sceneggiatori, che rifiutarono negli Anni XXX di testimoniare davanti alla Commissione delle attività anti americane il grande regista Billy Wilder ebbe a dire: " Due avevano del talento, gli altri erano semplicemente animati da inimicizia." Uno dei due salvati dal leggendario sarcasmo wilderiano era certamente Dalton Trumbo.

Forse il più celebre fra gli sceneggiatori che hanno reso grande Hollywood, inserito nella famigerata lista nera da McCarthy e i suoi accoliti negli Anni Cinquanta, Trumbo fu drammaticamente osteggiato assieme a molti colleghi per la sua appartenenza al Partito comunista americano. Colpito da interdizione al lavoro, condannato a undici mesi di prigione per essersi rifiutato alla delazione, Trumbo fu costretto a scrivere dietro pseudonimo. Dopo aver creato con questo sotterfugio VACANZE ROMANE e THE BRAVE ONE (ambedue premiati con gli Oscar) saranno infine Kirk Douglas (per SPARTACUS) e Otto Preminger (per EXODUS) ad avere il coraggio di assumerlo con il proprio nome. Nel 1960, quando la lista nera del maccartismo era ormai scomparsa.

Noto soprattutto per le sue commedie talvolta farsesche e spesso di successo, Jay Roach non è che aggiunga moltissimo di suo a DALTON TRUMBO: che, più che d'invenzione immaginifica, è un film che vive per l'interesse del suo soggetto e un impegno morale, ben sotolineato dalla sua sceneggiatura, oltre che della qualità dei suoi attori.
